Walking from your apartment in Vorberg

You can step outside at Vorberg 11 and explore the district on foot, passing fields, woodland and scattered farms. For a waymarked hike, check the official route map and find the signed starting point first.

The Vorberg circuit is an easy woodland walk with clearings and views across the Enns valley. Its published trailhead is at Drachenlift II, not the apartment building.

Easier walks around Ramsau and Vorberg

These difficulty ratings come from the tourist board. Consult each official route description for the current trail details.

  • Vorberg circuit: easy. Starts at Drachenlift II in Ramsau-Vorberg, following forest paths and some root-covered sections; it passes a wayside cross on Vorbergstrasse.
  • Halserberg circuit: easy. Starts at the Vorberg-Steirerhof walking portal and follows forest tracks and alpine meadows with views towards the Schladminger Tauern.
  • Ramsau village circuit: easy. Starts at the Ramsau Kulm tourist information office and follows the Kulmberg and Philosophenweg paths via Ramsau village.
  • Rittisberg fairy-tale trail: easy. Walk uphill from the lift base to Rittisstadl and the mountain playground, with story stations along the way. The downhill route is suitable for pushchairs.

Which Ramsau hike should you choose?

The ratings cover the official route, not any additional journey from Waldrand Apartments to its starting point.

Hut hikes below the Dachstein south face

The path to Südwandhütte starts by the Dachstein Glacier cable car base station and runs below the rock walls. You do not need to take the cable car to reach the hut. The route is rated moderate, mostly on gravel, and may retain snow in spring.

The five-huts trail is a substantial day walk from Ramsau village or Edelbrunn, moving through forest and alpine pasture beneath the south face. If you want a shorter outing, check the tourist board for route variations and possible return bus stops.

Guttenberghaus is reached from the Feistererhof walking portal. Although the official classification is moderate, the sustained climb and rougher mountain paths call for considerably more stamina than the walks on the Ramsau plateau.

Silberkar Gorge: steps, waterfalls and a tougher return

Silberkar Gorge is 10.6 km from the apartments, about 17 min by car to the trailhead. From the car park, a stepped path follows the stream towards the Silberkarhütte. When the gorge is open, you can return along the same route.

The alternative circular route via the Silberkar high-level path is more demanding, with exposed stretches and sections covered in tree roots. Check for closures and current conditions before setting off, especially after rain.

The Dachstein Glacier: sightseeing is not glacier trekking

The Dachstein Glacier cable car base station is 11 km from Vorberg 11, approximately 18 min by car. The cable car takes visitors to the glacier viewpoints. You must reserve a cable car place in advance, including when using the Schladming-Dachstein Card.

Walking on a glacier is quite different from visiting its viewpoints. The operator advises alpine experience and specialist safety equipment, including a rope, crampons and an ice axe, for glacier crossings. If you lack the training, choose a guided trip rather than setting off independently.

Cable cars and hiking buses with the guest card

The Schladming-Dachstein Card is included at Waldrand Apartments in summer 2026, from 14 May 2026 to 1 November 2026. Under the card rules, you can take one return journey on a participating mountain lift per day and use eligible RVB and hiking buses according to their timetables. The Dachstein Glacier cable car has its own rule: a stay of at least two consecutive nights, one return trip in the first seven days and another from day eight, with an advance seat reservation. It counts as the lift trip for that day.

What to pack and when to walk

  • For woodland and plateau routes: footwear with good grip, weatherproof layers, drinking water and an up-to-date route map.
  • For hut walks: plan for sustained climbs, quick weather changes and possible lingering snow. Published difficulty ratings assume favourable path and weather conditions.
  • For gorges and root-covered paths: expect slippery steps after rain and respect any trail closures or barriers.
  • For glacier tours and via ferratas: you need training and specialised equipment, or a qualified mountain guide. Check mountain lift operation and hut opening individually before each trip.
